BYB Lightning Safety Procedures
BYB has a lightning meter in
the concessions stand. The meter
measures the distance to any lightning in the area and indicates whether
lightning is moving towards or away from BYB fields.
The concessions manager
monitors the meter and informs the head umpire (the plate umpire on Diamond #2)
when lightning is approaching.
Fields will be cleared when
the meter indicates lightning is 8 miles away.
The head umpire, BYB league official or concessions manager will use an air
horn to signal when fields should be cleared.
Lightning will be monitored from the concessions stand and when it has
moved away from the area, play will be resumed.
If conditions continue to be dangerous, games will be cancelled and
everyone will leave BYB.
One blast of air horn:
Games suspended
All players, coaches and fans
must evacuate the fields,
dugouts, bleachers and shelter and take cover in their vehicles. Coaches should ensure that all players are
safely in a vehicle. Everyone is to
remain at BYB in their vehicles until the all-clear or games cancelled signal
is given.
No one is to remain in
dugouts or under the shelter. These are NOT safe locations when lightning
is present.
Two blasts of air horn: All Clear
Everyone may return to the fields
and play will resume.
Three blasts of air horn: Games Cancelled
Everyone is to leave
BYB. Coaches should confirm that all
players have a safe ride home. Games
will be rescheduled for a later date.
